X Out

X Out is a short point-and-click narrative game about closing pop-up windows created by a computer virus. As the virus infiltrates the user’s computer, the seemingly trashy pop-up ads become increasingly self-aware, until the player comes face-to-face with the virus itself. Play X Out now to follow nonsense pop-ups to their source and get rid of them once and for all.

This game was developed between January 12 and 15 for the UGD x Careers Winter Game Jam 2024 at the University of Chicago. The theme for the jam was “X within an X,” which our game interprets both literally and figuratively. X Out simulates a computer operating system with pop-up windows, inside of the game window within the player’s own computer operating system. Many of these pop-ups are nested, expanding upon the idea of “windows within windows.” Further, our game puts a playful spin on the phrasing of this theme, as the main gameplay mechanic is clicking the “X” button to close out of pop-up windows, and eventually, the game itself.

This game uses mouse to point, click, and move a paddle. It also has some text input boxes that can be clicked and typed into.
